The CNRS conducts multidisciplinary research aimed at advancing science and contributing to the country's economic, social and cultural development. It plays a central role in research into fusion by magnetic confinement with the aim of supporting the development of fusion reactors such as ITER in Cadarache. In this way, the aim of CNRS with this chair is to strengthen its scientific expertise in upstream fusion research.
The construction of the ITER tokamak in Cadarache, and the technological advances proposed by several start-ups around the world, are key steps towards the development of future fusion power plants capable of producing low-carbon energy. This challenge involves complex, non-linear, multi- scale physical mechanisms, involving turbulence, matter and heat transport, energetic particle physics, atomic physics and materials research. Solving them requires an interdisciplinary approach combining plasma modeling and numerical simulation, experimentation on magnetic confinement fusion machines, and advances in measurement science and technology, to analyze heat flows and characterize the behavior and evolution of material properties.
The aim of the Chair is therefore to strengthen fundamental research in one or more of these areas, in the context of magnetic confinement fusion.
